Many believed he would struggle to defeat Donald Trump in November. In his announcement, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him as the Democratic nominee.

In a letter posted on X, Biden explained, “While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.” He promised to address the nation later that week to provide more details about his decision.

Biden praised Harris, saying, “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President, and it’s been the best decision I’ve made.” He offered his full support and endorsement for Harris to become the party’s nominee this year.

According to sources, Biden and Harris spoke multiple times on Sunday before the president’s announcement. Biden thanked Harris for “being an extraordinary partner” in his letter and then endorsed her in a subsequent, In a statement, Harris thanked Biden for “his extraordinary leadership” and his “remarkable legacy of achievement.”

His withdrawal caps a singular national political career, bookended by Richard Nixon’s fall and Trump’s rise. He mounted four presidential bids. He spent 36 years in the U.S. Senate representing tiny Delaware. He rose to the chairmanships of the powerful Judiciary and Foreign Relations committees. And he served eight years as Barack Obama’s vice president.
