Walter Mzembi, the former Foreign Affairs Minister, has been embroiled in a lengthy legal battle. Recently, Harare regional magistrate Donald Ndirowei dismissed Mzembi’s bid to challenge his placement on remand. The court’s decision follows the confirmation of three outstanding arrest warrants against Mzembi, issued in November 2018, after he failed to appear in court.
Mzembi’s troubles began when he fell out of favor with the government, prompting him to leave Zimbabwe. His departure led to a prolonged period of non-compliance with court proceedings, resulting in the arrest warrants. Magistrate Ndirowei rejected Mzembi’s application to cancel the warrants, citing that his absence from court was deliberate.
The case has been ongoing for several years, with Mzembi’s legal team attempting to have the warrants set aside. However, the court’s latest ruling means Mzembi will have to return to court on Friday for trial date allocation.
Mzembi’s situation highlights the complexities of navigating the justice system, particularly when individuals choose not to comply with court proceedings. His case will likely continue to unfold in the coming weeks, with the trial date allocation expected to set the stage for the next phase of the proceedings
