MUTARE – Zimbabwe Senior Citizens Association (ZSCA) chairman Patrick Ndlovu has called on families and communities to prioritise the welfare of the elderly as the world marks the International Day of Older Persons on October 1.
Ndlovu said older people remained a cornerstone of society through their wisdom, cultural heritage and family guidance, but warned that many face health challenges, loneliness and isolation.
“One of the most remarkable aspects of aging is the vast repository of experience that seniors carry with them. They have weathered storms, navigated life’s twists and turns, and emerged stronger and wiser,” he said.
He stressed that the elderly are “custodians of our cultural heritage and traditions,” adding that their stories, customs and rituals must be preserved to ensure the nation’s identity remains vibrant for generations.
Ndlovu, however, said respect for the elderly must go beyond words, urging Zimbabweans to take practical steps to improve their lives.
“We must ensure that the elderly are treated with love, dignity and respect. That means spending quality time with them, supporting them in daily tasks, and including them in social activities so they do not feel isolated,” he said.
He also urged policymakers to prioritise affordable healthcare, safe living conditions and protection against elder abuse.
“Loving older people means standing up for their rights and advocating for their well-being. A society that cares for its elderly is one that recognizes the intrinsic value of every individual, regardless of age,” said Ndlovu.
He added that growing old was a privilege not granted to all, noting that the elderly deserved recognition for their contributions to families and the nation.
“By honouring and supporting our senior citizens, we ensure their twilight years are filled with the love and respect they rightly deserve,” Ndlovu said.
