Rusape – Sharara Secondary School in Makoni District was thrown into chaos this past week after a dramatic love affair between a married teacher and a small-scale tobacco farmer ended in an attempted suicide within the school’s teachers’ quarters.
According to sources close to the school, the incident involved Rumbidzai Mubhoyi, a teacher at the institution, and Zondai Shoti, a local tobacco farmer from the surrounding area. What began as a private affair spiraled into a public spectacle after Shoti allegedly attempted to take his own life by consuming a toxic tobacco chemical at Mubhoyi’s residence.
Witnesses who spoke to The Post on Sunday described the scene as “chaotic and emotional,” with Mubhoyi reportedly running frantically around the school compound seeking help from colleagues and neighbors as Shoti’s condition worsened.

“He arrived at the school looking visibly disturbed,” said one staff member who requested anonymity. “Moments later, there was commotion from the teachers’ cottages. We later heard that he had drunk a pesticide used for tobacco farming.”
However, the School Headmaster, has reapetedly warned Mubhoyi of her actions and affairs which are reportedly affecting the dignity of the institution.
Shoti was rushed to Rusape General Hospital after fellow teachers and community members intervened. His condition, sources said, was stabilized after emergency treatment.
Details surrounding the motive behind the suicide attempt remain unclear, though insiders suggest the two had been romantically involved for some time. The relationship reportedly became strained after disagreements believed to be linked to jealousy and financial disputes.
Both individuals are said to be married. Mubhoyi’s husband works as a long-distance truck driver, often away from home for extended periods, while Shoti, according to neighbors, has a wife and children in the nearby village. Sources allege that he had increasingly neglected his family in favor of his affair with the teacher, a situation that may have led to tension on both sides.
The incident has since sparked widespread discussion within the local community, with many expressing concern over the growing cases of infidelity and social conflicts stemming from extra-marital relationships in rural districts.
Meanwhile, residents around Sharara Secondary School say the event has left the usually quiet institution in shock. “It’s something we never expected from respected community members,” said a villager. “Everyone is still talking and laughing about it.”
