Digital Trends Report Exposes Public Outcry…

Harare – The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has released a damning digital trends report revealing escalating public frustration over the country’s deteriorating education system, poor teacher welfare, and economic hardships, with citizens taking to social media to demand urgent reforms.
According to the ZIMPULSE Report – June 2025, hashtags such as #SaveOurEducationZw and #PayCivServantsInUSD dominated social media platforms in the past month, indicating growing online activism and discontent with government policies. The report offers a data-driven overview of how Zimbabweans are using digital spaces to challenge state neglect of the public education sector.
“The public education system is on life support, and the government’s continued neglect is now impossible to ignore,” reads the ARTUZ press statement issued on Monday.
The report highlights widespread criticism of political elites, accusing them of prioritizing luxury and corruption over the welfare of educators and other civil servants. Teachers, in particular, continue to struggle with salaries paid in Zimbabwe’s volatile local currency while basic goods and services remain priced in US dollars.
“The continued rollout of the ZiG currency was met with deep skepticism,” ARTUZ noted, citing online reactions from educators and civil servants who feel shortchanged by the monetary policy.
ARTUZ also reported that visual content shared by the union, including images of dilapidated classrooms and teachers staging protests, attracted significant traction across various digital platforms. These visuals, the union says, have helped bring national attention to the lived realities of Zimbabwe’s underfunded education system.
“The ZIMPULSE report is a strategic tool for journalists, researchers, and civil society seeking to understand citizen concerns and the digital activism landscape,” ARTUZ said.
The union has called on the media to dig deeper into the report and elevate the voices of teachers and learners demanding “dignity, fairness, and access to quality public education.”
