Maputo, Mozambique – Thursday’s COSAFA Cup semifinal match will be etched in the memories of Zimbabwe’s Young Warriors for years to come. Despite a valiant comeback, they succumbed to Zambia in a nail-biting penalty shootout, losing 6-5 after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

Zambia struck early, with Pascal Phiri scoring in the 7th minute, followed by David Singwinda’s 25th-minute goal, giving Young Chipolopolo a comfortable 2-0 lead.

But Zimbabwe refused to give up. Prince Nlovu sparked the comeback with a 63rd-minute goal, followed by his 75th-minute equalizer, sending the match to penalty shootouts.

Aaron Phiri’s missed penalty gave Zimbabwe an initial advantage, but Prince Ndlovu was denied by Neverson Banda in the fifth spot, forcing sudden death. Ultimately, Zambia emerged victorious.

An emotional Zimbabwe coach Simon Marange struggled to contain his tears during the post-match interview. “I’m proud of the boys; they gave everything… I think they should be happy back home for the boys.”

Marange’s pride in his team was evident. “I’m proud of the boys and their brave campaign.”

Zambia’s win secured their spot in the final against South Africa and automatic qualification for the 2025 Under 20 AFCON finals.
