Marondera Rural District Council (RDC) has unveiled a wide range of tourism, agricultural and investment opportunities at the ongoing Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo in Mutare, positioning the district as a hub of both heritage and modern development.

Speaking on the sidelines of the expo, Marondera RDC Personal Assistant to CEO, Adwinah Rutendo Mutore, said the district, situated in Mashonaland East and falling under natural regions II (a) and II (b), boasts a favourable climate with cool temperatures, reliable rainfall, and a strong agricultural base.

“With a population of 136,000 according to the last census, Marondera is a watershed area on the central plateau where most rivers originate. Our farming activities include maize, tobacco, soya beans, seed production and a wide range of horticultural crops,” she said.

On the tourism front, Mutore highlighted the district’s historical, cultural and natural attractions. “We have Tsindi Ruins and the Bernard Mzeki Shrine, which is of great significance to Anglican pilgrims. In addition, there are three game parks, Gersho, Eldorado and Domavo, offering trophy hunting, game viewing, scenic relaxation and nature experiences,” she said.

She added that Marondera has 62 dams, with Wenimbi and Muchekeranwa being the largest, which present untapped opportunities for water-based tourism and investment. “We are seeking partners to develop conference centres and other leisure activities around our water bodies,” Mutore noted.

The district is also home to the Marondera Aerodrome, which authorities plan to upgrade to accommodate international arrivals and departures to decongest Robert Mugabe International Airport. At the same premise, an aerodrome technical college is already training young people in aircraft maintenance and construction.

Mutore praised this year’s edition of the tourism expo, saying the move to host it in Manicaland brought new vibrancy. “The turnout was impressive, even comparable to Bulawayo, and we managed to interact with many international investors,” she said.

Marondera RDC is banking on its mix of heritage sites, wildlife reserves, water resources and emerging infrastructure to attract investment and position itself as a leading tourism and agricultural hub in Zimbabwe.
