The US Embassy in Harare has denied allegations that one of its diplomats, Eric Kimpton, fled Zimbabwe after being involved in a fatal car accident that killed an 11-year-old girl. In a statement, the embassy expressed condolences and stated that Kimpton had cooperated with local authorities and departed the country. The embassy also confirmed that it had been in communication with the girl’s family and community.

Zimbabwean authorities, however, claim that Kimpton left the country without completing the necessary documentation and that investigations have stalled. Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, George Charamba, stated that Zimbabwe would take action to hold Kimpton accountable.
International law expert Kennedy Masiye noted that diplomats are protected from prosecution under the Vienna Convention, but that Zimbabwe can request a waiver from the US government to lift Kimpton’s immunity. The US Department of State’s guidance on diplomatic immunity states that it is a long-standing principle of international law, formalized in various conventions, including the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
