A pair of moderate earthquakes struck Kariba last Thursday, sending shockwaves through the community and leaving residents rattled. The resort town, which has experienced a number of earthquakes in recent years, was hit by two significant tremors in the space of just a few hours.
The first earthquake, measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale, occurred at around 3am, catching many residents off guard. Just a few hours later, at 9:36am, a second earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale struck, causing further alarm and disruption.
Both earthquakes were felt strongly in Kariba town, particularly in areas near the dam wall. The tremors were a stark reminder of the seismic activity that has become a regular occurrence in the region.
As the community begins to come to terms with the latest earthquakes, concerns are being raised about the potential risks and consequences of such events. With Kariba’s history of seismic activity, it is clear that the town and its residents must remain vigilant and prepared for any future earthquakes that may occur.
