BULAWAYO-The Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) war veterans have launched a scathing attack on controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo, describing him as a “briefcase businessman” representing a corrupt system.
This comes after Chivayo lashed out at critics on social media, labeling them “failed politicians” in a remark perceived to be aimed at Acting President Constantino Chiwenga.
Chivayo’s statement was seen as a response to Chiwenga’s speech at the burial of former Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Justin Mupamhanga, where he condemned corrupt elements within the ruling party.
Observers said this was targeted at ‘mbingas’ such as Chivayo.
In a statement posted on his X handle on Wednesday, Chivayo claimed that he would not be “moved by nor shaken by any veiled threats from failed politicians.”
“I will always support President E.D. Mnangagwa and ZANU PF’s vision, and no individual, Big or Small, can instill fear in me to decide otherwise. I will neither be moved by nor shaken by any veiled threats from failed politicians, “said Chivhayo.
However, veterans of the liberation struggle did not take Chivayo`s utterances lightly describing him as a nonentity in the country`s political circles.
Addressing a press conference at Bulawayo Media Centre on Thursday,ZIPRA spokesperson Buster Magwizi dismissed Chivayo as a “nonentity” in Zimbabwe’s political circles, accusing him of representing a corrupt system that lacks transparency in financial accounting and management .
The outspoken war veteran also criticized Chivayo’s failure to fulfill a national solar project tender in Gwanda, alleging that he squandered the funds and continues to benefit from political connections.
“Chivhayo is representing a corrupt system which is not represented by any measures of financial accounting or fiscus management in the country. Unfortunately, I don’t know which banks he uses but it seems he is given leeway from the political leadership of the country,” he said.
“When he was given a tender to put install a solar project in Gwanda.
“He squandered the money where else he is being given security so that he continues to benefit. We are not going to talk about nonentity like him because he is of no consequences to the country but he is being used as a tool of a system that is corrupt.
The war veterans warned Chivayo to stop his behaviour, which they see as a manifestation of a corrupt system.
“Stop it now Chivayo,” warns the war veterans.
Chivayo has been in the headlines recently for gifting luxury cars to musicians, influencers, soccer players, and other influential individuals, while boasting of his connections within the government and African leadership.
