A devastating incident occurred in Rusape this morning, resulting in the tragic death of a 20-year-old man. The young jogger, identified as Reason Matiye, was running along the railway line, oblivious to the approaching train due to wearing earphones.
As he jogged, Matiye failed to hear the sound of the oncoming train, and unfortunately, he was struck. The impact was severe, resulting in the amputation of both legs. Emergency services were quickly summoned, and an ambulance rushed to the scene.
Despite efforts to save his life, Matiye’s injuries proved too severe. He was initially taken to Rusape General Hospital but was later referred to Mutare for further treatment. Tragically, Matiye succumbed to his injuries during the transfer and was pronounced dead upon arrival in Mutare.
The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) released a statement confirming the incident and expressing their condolences to the family of the deceased. “Due to the severity of the injuries, the boy died on his way to Mutare,” the statement read.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings, especially when engaging in physical activities near hazardous areas such as railway lines. The use of earphones or headphones can be a significant distraction, and this case highlights the devastating consequences that can result from such distractions.
NRZ urge, as the community mourns the loss of this young life, it is essential to emphasize the need for vigilance and caution when exercising or engaging in activities near potential hazards.
