Business as Usual, Government Urges Citizens to Ignore Demo Calls

By Staff Reporter

Temperatures are rising in Zimbabwe, and it’s not just the weather. The Southern African country is witnessing an escalation of intra-party fighting within the governing ZANU PF party. At the center of the storm is Blessed Runesu Geza, an outspoken war veteran and ZANU PF Central Committee member, who has been making waves with his bold statements on social media from an unknown location.

Geza’s latest call to action triggered a firestorm of controversy, with many interpreting his words as a direct challenge to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership. The war veteran’s criticism of Mnangagwa’s administration has been building for some time, with Geza accusing the president of betraying the liberation struggle, mismanaging the country, and using the state apparatus to suppress dissent within the party.

Geza, a recalled member of the ZANU PF central committee, continues to rally support for an uprising against the government. Despite warnings from government officials and other party members to ignore Geza’s call, the situation remains volatile, with reports of bombings and intimidation spreading fear among citizens.

The latest incident and unconfirmed reports on social media saw Geza’s farm house bombed, while several of his associates have had their homes and properties destroyed in recent days. Additionally. However, a series of bombings took place in Harare and Goromonzi yesterday, which the police have confirmed.

Geza’s defiance is rooted in his opposition to the government’s proposed “2030 Agenda,” which aims to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term in office beyond the constitutionally mandated two-term limit. The war veteran’s bold stance attracted a mix of admiration and trepidation, with many Zimbabweans watching anxiously as the situation unfolds.

ZANU PF has responded by labeling Geza’s statements as “treasonous” and suspending two MPs from all party activities for allegedly fanning factionalism. The party’s spokesperson, Christopher Mutsvangwa, has also weighed in, condemning Geza’s remarks as “outlandish and treasonable”.

Despite the backlash, Geza remains undeterred, using social media to rally support and mobilize his followers.

Geza’s rise to prominence within ZANU PF has been marked by his outspoken and often provocative style. A war veteran and longtime member of the party, Geza has built a reputation as a fierce critic of corruption and mismanagement. His willingness to speak truth to power has earned him both admiration and criticism, making him a polarizing figure within the party.

Geza and Ethan Mathibela, who is also on police wanted list, along with many other citizens, are vehemently opposed to this move, citing Mnangagwa’s failure to address the country’s economic and social challenges, as well as allegations of corruption and nepotism. They are calling for Mnangagwa’s immediate resignation and an end to the “2030 Agenda”.

Constitutional experts, including one of the 2013 constitution drafters and Movement for Democratic member, Douglas Mwonzora, have also weighed in, stating that any attempt to amend the constitution to allow for an extension would require a lengthy and complex process, including a referendum.

Meanwhile, the government has guaranteed citizens maximum security and safety, urging them to continue with their day-to-day business across the country. Police officers have been manning key locations and issuing statements since the day Geza called for the March 31 demo, reassuring the public that they are prepared to maintain law and order.

Despite the government’s assurances, many citizens remain on edge, worried about the potential for further violence and instability. As the situation continues to unfold, the fate of Zimbabwe hangs in the balance with latest visuals shared on X from Bulawayo, a good number of people taking it up into the streets. https://x.com/i/status/1905586746483499295
