The City of Harare has confirmed a bed bug infestation in Mbare, a high-density suburb, and is taking action to address the issue. The city has launched an emergency pest control response to mitigate the situation and prevent further spread.
The infestation, locally known as “tsikidzi,” has raised concerns among residents, who are worried about the potential health implications and discomfort caused by the pests. Bed bugs are notorious for their ability to infest homes, hotels, and public spaces, feeding on human blood and causing skin irritation.
To combat the outbreak, city authorities will implement measures to control the infestation, including fumigation and public education campaigns. Starting Monday, 7 April 2025, city teams will begin spraying affected areas, starting with Matererini and Matapi Flats. Residents in these areas are advised to prepare and cooperate with the city’s teams, who will be working to reduce the bed bug population and prevent further spread.
In addition to spraying, the city will raise awareness among residents on the factors that contribute to infestations, such as overcrowding, as well as provide tips on ways to avoid and control the spread of bed bugs. Community volunteers will be required to assist with the spraying efforts, ensuring that all areas are covered.
However, the city acknowledges that spraying alone will not be enough to eradicate the problem. Bed bugs hide in small crevices on beds, sofas, wardrobes, walls, and other areas, making regular physical cleaning necessary to eliminate them. Residents are encouraged to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of bed bugs in their homes and communities.
The city’s efforts aim to control the outbreak and prevent further spread, addressing concerns among residents about the potential health implications and discomfort caused by the pests.
