Harare Moyor, Jacob Mafume has been arrested for alleged criminal abuse of office by the Special Anti-corruption Commission Unity (SACCU).

“The Mayor was arrested and being held at Rhodesville police station, were he is being questioned” Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyati confirmed.

His lawyer Tonderai Bhatasara confirmed the arrest. and told this publication that his client is being charged for abusing his office involving the sale and allocation of residential stands.

Upon arrest Mafume is said to have allocated stands in Westlea, Harare to his sister and his secretary without following procedure, allegations which he has since refuted upon being tipped off of the arrest last week saying hi hands were clean.

Bhatasara however told this publication that Mafume will appear before Harare Magistrate today where he will seek his bail.

Movement for Democratic Change Alliance Vice President, Tendai Biti, said the arrest of Harare Mayor is a continued assault on the democratic space and the democratic movement.
