Mphoko, The Rise and Fall of a National Hero

By Shingirai Vambe

A key figure in Zimbabwe’s independence, Phelekezela Mphoko, passed away after a long illness.

Mphoko played a crucial role in the 1979 Lancaster House Conference, which confirmed Zimbabwe’s independence. He later served as Vice President under Robert Mugabe from 2014 to 2017.

However, Mphoko’s fortunes changed with the November 2017 military-led coup, which led to his ousting. He was subsequently relegated to ordinary life, facing periodic court appearances.

In a condolence message, President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared Mphoko a national hero, recognizing his contributions to Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. Mnangagwa praised Mphoko’s bravery and outstanding leadership, saying his passing was a significant loss for the nation.

Mphoko’s life was marked by both remarkable achievements and dramatic setbacks. His legacy as a national hero serves as a testament to his enduring impact on Zimbabwe’s history.

Former Minister, Walter Mzembi also sent his condolence message and said, “Farewell, VP Mphoko. Your legacy is complex, and many may not recall that you were the rightful claimant to the presidency after Robert Mugabe’s ousting. However, you chose not to contest the throne, perhaps overwhelmed by the events unfolding at the time,” said Mzembi.

he further added and said, your absence during the November 2017 coup created a power vacuum that Zimbabwe struggled to navigate, especially after President Emmerson Mnangagwa had temporarily fled to South Africa.

“I share these thoughts not to stir controversy but to set the record straight about those fateful two weeks in November 2017. While I appreciate President Mnangagwa’s declaration of your hero status, I’m also aware of the challenges you faced during your seven-year legal battles.

It’s ironic that we often honor our national heroes posthumously, yet struggle to coexist with them peacefully during their lifetime. As we bid you farewell, let’s reflect on the importance of unity and reconciliation in our nation’s pursuit of a brighter future. May you rest in peace, VP Mphoko.”
