Witchcraft Accusations Stir Up Debate on Elder Abuse.

By Admore Mbonda

Magunje– In a heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the small community of Magunje, a 72-year-old woman, Mavis Chimbangu (not her real name), has been accused of witchcraft by her own children. This distressing case has ignited a broader conversation about the treatment of the elderly in today’s society and the erosion of traditional family values.

Once revered for their wisdom and experience, the elderly are increasingly becoming victims of neglect, abuse, and unfounded accusations. Mavis expressed her anguish in a recent interview: “I never imagined my own children would turn against me like this. I have spent my life caring for them, and now they label me a witch. It breaks my heart.”

Residents of Magunje have voiced their concerns about the growing trend of blaming the elderly for misfortunes within families. Local shopkeeper Tendai Mapfumo remarked, “It used to be that we sought our elders for guidance. Now, it seems like they are the first ones to be accused when things go wrong. It’s a sad reflection of our society.”

The situation has not gone unnoticed, as many community members lament the loss of respect for the elderly. “We have lost our way,” said 54-year-old Chipo Moyo. “The youth no longer value the teachings of their grandparents. Instead, they turn to social media and the internet, leaving behind the rich traditions that once connected us.”

This generational shift has not only affected family dynamics but has also left a void in the community. The invaluable role that the elderly once played in passing down knowledge, traditions, and values has been dramatically diminished, leading to a sense of isolation among older residents.

Local leaders are calling for a renewed focus on intergenerational relationships. Chief Chundu, a local councilor, emphasized the need for community action: “We must work together to restore the respect and care that our elders deserve. It is crucial for the health of our families and community.”

The unfolding story of Mavis Chimbangu serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to honor and protect elders, who have so much to offer. The community’s response will determine whether they can bridge the gap between generations and cultivate an environment where respect and love prevail, rather than suspicion and neglect.

As Magunje stands at a crossroads, the question remains: will they reclaim the values that once held their families together, or will they continue down a path of division and disrespect? The answer lies in the hearts of the next generation.
