A Disturbing Trend Of Railway Accidents, Headphones Claim 1 in Bulawayo

By Shingirai Vambe

The recent incident in Bulawayo, where a man lost his life after being struck by a moving train while wearing headphones, has brought to the forefront concerns about pedestrian safety near railway lines in Zimbabwe. This incident is eerily reminiscent of a similar tragedy that occurred three months ago in Rusape, where a teenager was involved in a harrowing accident while jogging and exercising with headphones on. The teenager was amputated by a locomotive and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

The Bulawayo incident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 12:55 PM near the city’s central station. According to the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), the victim was walking alongside active train tracks while wearing noise-cancelling headphones, potentially unaware of the approaching locomotive. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the man lost his life in the tragic accident.

These incidents highlight a disturbing trend of individuals underestimating the dangers of railway lines while wearing headphones or engaging in activities that impair their awareness of their surroundings. The NRZ has emphasized the critical importance of pedestrian awareness near active rail lines, urging people to remain vigilant and avoid using headphones or mobile devices that can distract them from potential hazards.

Commenting on the accident, digital media consultant, Trevor Masimirembwa and various stakeholders in the mobile network industry said in today’s rapidly evolving world, digital adaptation and migration have become essential components of our daily lives. We rely on digital gadgets to stay connected, access information, and enhance productivity. However, as recent incidents have shown, these devices can also pose significant risks, particularly when used in situations that require attention and awareness.

“However, digital gadgets can also be a source of distraction and danger. When used in situations that require attention and awareness, such as walking or jogging near railway tracks, these devices can impair our ability to respond to potential hazards. The recent incidents of individuals being struck by trains while wearing headphones are a reminder of the risks associated with digital gadget use,” said Masimirembwa.

“To mitigate these risks, it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers of digital gadgets and take steps to minimize their impact. This requires a balance between technology use and situational awareness. By being mindful of our surroundings and avoiding distractions while using digital gadgets, we can reduce the risk of accidents and ensure our safety and well-being,” noted mobile network operators..

The NRZ has issued safety reminders, emphasizing the importance of pedestrian awareness near active rail lines. Pedestrians are advised to maintain constant vigilance when near railway tracks, avoid using headphones or mobile devices that impair hearing, and only cross tracks at designated pedestrian crossings. Additionally, pedestrians are reminded that trains require a significant stopping distance, and it is crucial to exercise caution when approaching railway lines.

The NRZ and local law enforcement are investigating the circumstances surrounding the Bulawayo incident. The NRZ extends its condolences to the victim’s family and reminds the public that railway corridors demand extreme caution at all times. The authorities urge anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
