Zimbabwe Plunged into Darkness as ZETDC Suffers Nationwide Power Grid Failure

By Shingirai Vambe

Zimbabwe was plunged into darkness on Monday evening after the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) suffered a nationwide power outage following the loss of the national electricity grid.

The unexpected blackout, which affected homes, businesses, industries and critical public infrastructure across the country, occurred at approximately 6:24 pm, disrupting normal economic and social activities.

In a statement issued shortly after the incident, ZETDC confirmed that the national grid had collapsed, triggering widespread electricity interruptions nationwide.

“We noted the outage at 18:24 hours on 06 July 2026. Kindly be advised that we have lost the national grid. All relevant departments have been notified, and power restoration processes are currently underway,” the power utility said.

The electricity distributor said technical teams had immediately been deployed to investigate the cause of the grid failure and commence restoration procedures.

While assuring consumers that every effort was being made to restore power as quickly and safely as possible, ZETDC did not immediately disclose the cause of the outage or provide an estimated timeline for the full restoration of electricity supplies.

The nationwide blackout affected residential suburbs, commercial centres, manufacturing industries and mining operations, with many businesses forced to suspend operations as they waited for electricity to return.

The outage also raised concerns over potential disruptions to essential services, including healthcare facilities, telecommunications, water pumping stations and other critical infrastructure that depend on uninterrupted electricity supplies, although many key institutions rely on backup power systems during such emergencies.

The latest grid failure comes at a time when Zimbabwe has been pursuing major investments in electricity generation, transmission infrastructure and renewable energy projects aimed at improving the reliability of the country’s power supply and reducing dependence on electricity imports.

Authorities said further updates would be communicated as restoration efforts progress.
