MUTARE – The Zanu PF aspiring Member of Parliament for Dangamvura/Chikanga constituency – Isau Mupfumi – has embarked on a sports development program in the constituency that is set to economically and socially empower the community.

To kick start the project, Mupfumi, recently sponsored a historic Dangamvura/Chikanga Independence Sports Gala to the tune of US$8000.

The sponsorship package included winner’s prize money for soccer and netball competitions. The package also included complete football kits for the participating teams.

The kits comprised of soccer and netballs and complete sets of uniforms.

In the soccer category Ward 13 became victorious and lifted the trophy plus US$1000 cash.

In netball Ward 16 were triumphant with a trophy and pocketed US$1000 cash.

Both final matches were played on Monday.

Sungura maestro Alick Macheso the leader of the famous musical group Orchestra Mberikwazvo was the guest of honour who handed over the trophies and other prizes at the colourful and glittering ceremony.

Mupfumi said the gesture complements President Emmerson Mngangwa’s calls to uplift sports development in the country.

Said Mupfumi: “We held this event following all the Covid-19 restrictions measures. This is our initiative as a constituency to embrace developmental programmes like these and we have seen that sport is popular and it unites people for a common cause of uplifting ourselves.”

He added: “Sport plays a leading role in socially and economically empowering the community. As a constituency we will continue rolling out sports programs so that the youths and members of our community remain focused.”

He explained: “These platforms play a critical role in nurturing and developing the various talents of individuals. We may end up producing future stars that will play soccer and netball at higher levels.”

“It is my duty to initiate such programs, as they will help our youths to refrain from immoral behaviors like substance abuse and unwanted pregnancies,” said Mupfumi.

“With the cash prizes availed I want to urge the recipients to put the money into good use as we continue putting in place such programmes in the future,” said Mupfumi.

Residents in the constituency applauded the move by Mupfumi saying it also provided entertainment to them.

“We want to thank our Mutare businessman for this gesture because it will make our youths in the constituency to be focused. This is the first of its kind and it shows that Mupfumi is concerned about our youths. This will bring us together as members of the constituency,” said Pardon Nyamayedenga a resident from Dangamvura.

Mupfumi also donated a full soccer kit to 31 Infantry Battalion soccer team, which is in the same constituency.
